WOMEN AMPUTEE FOOTBALL

WOMEN’S AMPUTEE FOOTBALL

Women’s amputee football is a recent concept but is growing very fast in African countries and Central and South America. WAFF has decided to establish a working group, which would regularly meet and work on the development of women’s amputee football in order to help reach a higher level and engage more women to participate in our sport.

To already existing teams from countries like Cameroon, Rwanda, Ghana, Poland, and Haiti we would like to add more representatives from other parts of the World and create camps, leagues and future championships.
During the recently finished Amputee Football World Cup in Turkiye two female players played together with men. Amie Donathan from the USA and Florencia Nuñez from Uruguay. Amie is 18 years old. She is left forward.  Florencia Nuñez is 23, a center forward. They were the only women who participated in the World Cup with men. WAFF is working on organizing competitions and camps for female teams however in order to do so first they need to attract women to come and play. As Florencia says: Football changed my life. It took away the shame and persecution I felt. It is a sport for both men and women. Both girls are treated equally in the team. They show their skills, dedication, and love for sports. Amie added:  You have this community and bond with people that you wouldn’t normally have, and you meet so many new people and people that you can just connect with on a different level. You also get to play a really fun game that connects you with other people that aren’t amputees.
In the upcoming weeks, the WAFF working group will gather all the updated data regarding women playing amputee football worldwide and prepare the promotion plan and activities which will focus on the development of this sport.
